Did you know that biblical scholars suggest up to 500 people witnessed Jesus in his resurrected body firsthand? The very first eyewitnesses were Mary Magdalene and a few other women, followed by the disciples and eventually hundreds more. The personal accounts of these witnesses were instrumental in spreading the Good News. Even today, more than 2,000 years after the resurrection, witnesses continue to share their personal experiences of encountering the living God!
Being a witness for God is a theme that runs throughout the Bible. From the prophets in the Old Testament to the apostles in the New Testament, God has always called his followers to represent him to others. Today, this is a calling that all Christians around the world share: to be a witness for God. Regardless of our age, occupation, education, personality type or even geographical location, we can be witnesses to those around us. Like the first few who encountered the resurrected Jesus, we too can share our experience of how Jesus transformed our lives. How we can do this may be simpler than you think.
Generosity is one of those ways. When we truly experience the hope, freedom and love of Jesus, it naturally shifts how we live and use our time, gifts and resources. The resulting changes in behavior and lifestyle are noticeable to others. People recognize when we are generous. They see when we offer grace and forgiveness instead of seeking revenge. Even in moments when we try to give in secret—like when we leave a generous tip or go out of our way to help someone in need—our witness does not go unnoticed by others.
In all these ways, we bear witness to our faith, which can significantly influence how others perceive and experience Jesus as well. Through our generosity, we embody a God of love, grace, forgiveness and hope, truly reflecting the heart and character of God. This representation invites others to encounter him in their own lives. Let’s not take for granted the impact that generosity can have on our witness. Each day, we have the chance to represent Jesus to others in ways that can be genuinely life-changing.
What would happen to this simple act of generosity, as a witness, if we carried with it confidence in the hope that does not disappoint? Not only would people see our actions, but they would also recognize our genuine belief in the risen Jesus, the One who has overcome the world and all of its problems. Be encouraged to move forward each day with confident hope through the resurrection by being generous, no matter how big or small those deeds may be. To send you off, read 2 Corinthians 9:12-13 and ask God to help you!
12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.13 Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else.
