In today’s culture, the most sought-after resource is time. Our days are filled with commuting, work meetings, deadlines, running errands, shuttling kids and much more. As summer officially arrives, the constraints of time become even more pronounced with all the additional events, activities and vacations crowding our calendars. We’re feeling this squeeze right now! It’s no surprise that we feel like there isn’t enough time in the day to accomplish everything. Yet, there is hope in slightly changing our perspective on time.

In God’s Word, there are two important concepts of time to understand. Chronos is one of these concepts. It’s the measure of seconds, minutes, hours, days and years. It’s the way most of us are familiar with time—the time we engage with regularly and the one we use to organize our days. However, there is also a second concept of time: kairos, which is more of a qualitative measure of time. It refers to an opportune moment or an appointed time for God to act. Kairos is God’s time. It encompasses those divine moments when we see God opening doors of opportunity and inviting us to step in.

This understanding of kairos time can help us when our chronos time feels strapped and limited, like, well, right now. While summer can be incredibly busy for some of us, it’s also a unique time when kairos moments can appear in abundance. With all the extra activities, family time, and life experiences naturally built into the rhythm of summer, this season is an opportune time to become attuned to those moments and opportunities God is opening up for us to soak in, enjoy and receive something.

There are many ways God may invite us to step out of chronos timekeeping and step into his God-appointed kairos time this summer. It might be experienced on a summer afternoon while sharing ice cream with our family, prompting us to pause and soak in the moment of being together and the blessing of sharing quality time. Perhaps during a summer vacation, while relaxing outside and slowly sipping our coffee on a quiet morning, we find ourselves drawn to the beauty of God’s creation, responding with worship and adoration. The opportunities for God to meet us in kairos moments are endless!

As we enter the hustle and bustle of summer, let’s embrace this season with anticipation for God to reveal new kairos moments for us to recognize and receive. By embracing it, we may enjoy the summer in a fresh, new way that we have never experienced. This could be a summer that catalyzes our faith in unexpected moments or leaves lasting memories to cherish for years to come, if we approach it with open hearts and open hands, ready to receive the opportune moments when they arrive!
