Today is Maundy Thursday. The setting is an upper room in which Jesus sits with his disciples and shares what we now call the Last Supper. The Messiah is moments away from beginning his descent to the cross where he will give his life as the ultimate sacrifice for our salvation. In his parting words to the disciples Jesus lays out for them again his divine mission and what it all means. This is what he says,
“This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.”- Luke 22:19-20.
Through these words, Jesus is telling his disciples that he is about to give up his life. The time is now. As powerful as his sacrifice, what makes Jesus’ statement even more rich is the word he uses for given. In the original language this word is didomi. It is the fullest sense of giving. It is translated to include definitions such as “to give something to someone, to bestow a gift, to let have, to reach out, to supply, to give forth from one’s self, to permit.”¹
This is one of the best examples of generosity as a word that you can find in the Bible. And, Jesus is using it here, in his final words with his disciples. What Jesus reveals in this statement is his mission of giving on the cross is not only an act of sacrifice, but it’s an example of generosity!
As you journey through this weekend and reflect on Christ’s own journey to and through the tomb, we challenge you to think not only about Jesus as the Savior, but also Jesus as the Savior who is generous.
Dynamis Ministries is on its way of beginning a new journey towards generosity where we encourage others to discover the power of generosity in their own lives. We want to invite you in this very first post, to say yes to increasing your generosity and growing it in the lives of others together.
