When was the last time you read 2 Peter in the Bible? It’s a short yet powerful book, just like Peter’s first letter—1 Peter. Both books are like a polished New Testament resume on faith and what life looks like for people who follow Jesus. They are a “paragon of excellence,” as the great reformer Martin Luther put it. This is unexpected, honestly, with these books coming from Peter.

Peter, a rough and tough tumbler of a fisherman whom Jesus said, “Follow me,” transformed into a wise and mature leader in the span of 34 years between meeting Jesus and writing his second letter. And within this letter, Peter offers one of the most encouraging statements in the entire Bible in 2 Peter 1:3:

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

This is a treasure of truth. God has given us everything we need for a godly life. There aren’t many areas of life where we believe we have everything we need, and yet Peter says we have everything we need in what should be the #1 aim of followers of Jesus—living a godly life. This is incredibly generous of God.

Do you believe you have everything you need to live a godly life?

Chances are, if you’re normal, you’ve justified some of your subpar living because of tough circumstances, difficult people, bad luck, traumas and hurts—the list goes on. We all do it. God cares about our whole life experience and has grace upon grace for us, but that doesn’t negate the truth that Peter presents.

To help you catch Peter’s drift, what we have been given that is complete and not lacking in any way is faith. The kind of faith that God gives his children is everything we need. This faith is a precious gift. It’s the faith that is received by grace, so it’s faith intertwined with grace.

We often focus on adding to our faith as Christians, which is rightly motivated because Peter himself goes right into that next in his letter: “For this reason, make every effort to add to your faith…“ We don’t add to our faith because it’s lacking; we add to it because it’s so good—to avoid being ineffective and unproductive! However, before we consider adding anything to our faith, we need to first make sure we know how valuable it is in and of itself. Here’s why it’s so valuable:

Through faith, we have access to God’s divine power and get to participate in his divine nature.

The power to live a God-honoring life comes not from within us but from God. We lack the resources to do it on our own. Within ourselves, we don’t have everything we need to truly follow God. That’s why he allows us to access his divine power and participate in his nature. Whatever obstacles you’re facing this week, whether for the first time or too many times to count, be encouraged. You have everything you need, through faith, to reach your God-given potential and live a godly life.
