Here we are on the eve of Christmas Eve, such a wonderful time of year as we remember our Savior’s birth. The wonder of God’s love shows up in many ways throughout the Christmas season whether it’s family celebrations, movie classics, Christmas hymns, real life happenings or even stories from the past. We want to spread some hope to you with one of those inspiring Christmas stories.
The year was 1914. World War I just broke out several months prior and armies were settling into the grim reality of the harshness of trench warfare, the battle tactic where opposing forces fought from intricate trench networks dug in the ground. Sometimes the battle lines drawn by these opposing trenches were separated by a mere 50 yards. However, advancement of the armies was nearly impossible because any attempt to step outside the carved-out earth and enter ‘No Man’s Land’, the area between opposing trenches, meant almost certain death.
Yet it was this very spot, the area referred to as No Man’s Land, the space where death was most prominent in war, where community and life and Christmas were celebrated. It began with a song. On Christmas Eve night a few German soldiers started singing the Christmas hymn, Silent Night from their trenches. Recognizing the tune from their own trenches less than a football field away, British soldiers joined in on the melody. It didn’t take long before both sides of young men, some still only teenagers, were exchanging Christmas carols.
The joint caroling lifted the spirits from both sides. Soon soldiers of opposite sides began exchanging calls from their trenches, “We no shoot, you no shoot.” Finally, with a great deal of apprehension, wonder, fear, and hope soldiers began stepping out of their trenches and walking into no man’s land. These soldiers were met by their enemies, the same people they were trying to kill only hours earlier and were greeted with handshakes and smiles.
This began what is now referred to as “The Christmas Truce of 1914.” In the days that followed enemy armies across the battle lines met in No Man’s Land to celebrate Christmas. During this time small gifts were exchanged, meals were shared and stories were told of life back home. A friendly game of soccer even broke out amongst the soldiers!
What a powerful reminder that this story provides as we enter Christmas Eve 2021! Even in the midst of turmoil and hardship, peace can be found in unlikely places. The power of a gift can break down barriers and turn enemies into brothers. A simple song can lift spirits. We hope that in your own Christmas celebrations this year you may find peace, joy, love and generosity in unexpected ways.
