Being on the Board of Directors at Dynamis Ministries has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Dynamis has developed a tool called the Generosity Plan, which provides a personalized and powerful experience helping participants discover how to be more generous with their time, gifts and resources. Last year, the first full-year Dynamis was in operation, we had several dozen people experience the Plan. My wife Kim and I were among them.

We had three one-hour confidential discussions with our Generosity Coach, Ben Berg. In between sessions we had a little “homework” (don’t worry, it’s not graded) that included some experiential items that really helped us along in our generosity journey. At the last session Ben gave us our Generosity Plan that included a short list of thoughtful suggestions on how we could grow in our generosity. These helped us consider how we might be more generous with the blessings that God has given us. By the way, don’t think this is “estate planning or financial planning.” It was way better than that.

Dynamis offers the plan for no charge (yes it’s free). It was very interesting and easy to go through. My wife and I agreed that the outcome was powerful for us both. For example, we have both become more generous with our time. I serve on two nonprofit boards, and my wife has discovered a number of new volunteer activities that align with her values. We’ve also started a new and more generous way to financially assist our adult kids who are both married and have children of their own. Lastly, we’ve decided on better ways to share our financial blessings with organizations and ministries we care about.

The more I explore the area of generosity through conversation, prayer and scripture, the more I realize that all I have and all that I am is a gift from God. I recently rediscovered 1 Chronicles 29, where King David invites his people to pray with him after they’ve successfully built a new temple. David personally donated huge sums of precious materials as well as his money. This chapter demonstrates wonderfully and powerfully David’s beliefs about generosity. Here are some selected verses from 1 Chronicles 29:

“The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the Lord. David the king also rejoiced greatly. David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying,

“Praise be to you, Lord,

the God of our father Israel,

from everlasting to everlasting.

Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the

majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours.

Yours, Lord, is the kingdom;

you are exalted as head over all.

Wealth and honor come from you;

you are the ruler of all things.

In your hands are strength and power

to exalt and give strength to all.

Now, our God, we give you thanks,

and praise your glorious name.

My prayer for you (and me) is that we would catch a glimpse of these powerful verses and live a life reflecting the generosity shown here. The world certainly needs for us to be engaged in a real, thoughtful and generous way. Perhaps going through the Generosity Plan would give you the clarity and confidence toward a more joy-filled and generous life?
